James L. McArdle, Ph.D.
Lead Development Specialist
3M Abrasives Systems Division
James L. McArdle is a Lead Product Development Specialist at the 3M Abrasive Systems Division Laboratory in St. Paul, MN. Jim received a Ph.D. in Ceramic Materials Science at The Pennsylvania State University in 1988, where he studied polymorphic crystal transformations and microstructure development in gel-derived alumina ceramics.
After leaving Penn State, Jim worked at the Honeywell Corporation Underseas Systems Division on Government-sponsored research and development programs. He developed novel superconductive ceramics and piezoelectric materials used in inertial guidance, sonar, and electro-mechanical actuator applications. In addition, he worked on high-temperature ceramic materials for closed-cycle stored chemical energy propulsion systems used in lightweight air-launched torpedoes.
Since joining 3M in 1990, Jim has worked in several 3M Corporate and Division laboratories. A breadth of materials research and development experience has included the applied science of accelerated aluminum corrosion, sol-gel ceramic fiber precursor synthesis, ceramic fiber product development, transparent ceramic armor, and novel ceramic materials for abrasive and wear applications.
In 1997, an interest in alumina abrasives led Jim to the 3M Abrasive Systems Division Laboratory, where he developed novel ceramic and composite abrasive grains and several new coated-abrasive products for high-pressure, precision metalworking applications. More recently, Jim has concentrated on diamond and cBN abrasives and has successfully commercialized several coated and bonded
superabrasive product lines. Most recently, Jim has led a corporate-wide initiative to develop novel, customer-focused diamond abrasive solutions for the hard-floor market segment, and has studied toward understanding the basic mechanisms of brittle-material surface modification in the grinding and polishing of hard-floor materials.
Dr. McArdle has published papers in several refereed scientific journals, and has 30+ patents issued or pending worldwide. He is affiliated with The American Ceramic Society (www.ceramics.org), the Industrial Diamond Association of America (www.superabrasives.org), and with the Unified Abrasive Manufacturers’ Association (www.UAMA.org) where he assists with abrasive standardization activities.
