Why
The industry has a “little” problem. O.K., maybe not so little. It suffers from a serious,
but treatable condition known as multiple personality disorder. The causes include a
lack of identity and the failure to deliver a unified core message. The symptoms are
obvious to everyone – very blurry vision, failure to thrive, and general confusion.
Healthy industries don’t suffer from multiple personality disorder. The prognosis could
be really good. A long and healthy life if the patient begins treatment immediately.

Polished Concrete has grown from a niche to a mainstream design element. To recognize today’s most outstanding projects, the editors of CONCRETE SURFACES magazine have created the annual Polished Concrete Awards. They are asking everyone to help publicize the concrete industry’s advances in this important market segment.

Concrete Surfaces Magazine will award winners at ICPSC 2011

In addition to being congratulated for a job well done, the awards will give concrete polishing contractors an opportunity to talk about award-winning projects with architects or building owners who might be undecided about what floor treatment to specify or install.

The panel of judges will select one winner in each category:

Residential – single or multi-family structures

Commercial – office buildings, warehouses

Industrial – any structure used for manufacturing

Retail – big box stores, shopping malls, restaurants

Educational - school buildings, dormitories, athletic facilities

Institutional – hospitals, churches, municipal facilities

Craftsman – decorative showcase projects

You can also vote online for your favorite project to win the Readers’ Choice Award.

The deadline for entries has been extended to July 25, 2011. Entries must include a detailed description, photographs, and a list of project team members. Further details and entry forms are available at www.concretesurfacesmag.com

Once again the Concrete Polishing Luncheon and Forum drew the largest attendance of all WOC luncheon presentations.

The topics of discussion, polished concrete floor maintenance and slip/fall liability, were continuations of the “Hot Topics” discussed at ICPSC 2010 and a large reason for the turnout.

The 2011 “World of Concrete” polishing luncheon, sponsored by the ”ICPSC”, brought together a roundtable of industry experts to continue the dialogue that began at the 2010 conference in Atlanta. The discussion detailed the transition from a “Phase 1” equation based industry to “Phase 2” sustainability. The discussion was lead by Mark Schuler, Pat Harrison, Carl Cabot, and Ken Fisher. Mark Schuler of Mr. Clean Maintenance Systems detailed the principles of polished concrete maintenance and restoration. His company spent three years researching and designing protocols to maintain polished concrete and now maintains millions of square feet EVERY NIGHT. He’s the “go to guy” when a polished floor has reached crisis level.

The discussion also addressed slip/fall issues and the ICPSC “position paper” regarding DCOF and SCOF data collection.

This was lead by Ken Fisher of Nu-Safe Floor Care and included how proper maintenance impacts COF and slip/fall liability. Carl Cabot from American Decorative Concrete shared his expertise regarding the unique demands of maintaining polished concrete which has been colored. Also presenting was Pat Harrison of SSI. Pat is literally on the front line of the polished concrete maintenance issue. He is facing ever increasing end user demand for maintenance protocols for the millions of square feet of polished concrete that his company is responsible for.
